“You made me see a light of hope in the middle of the storm. When I felt like I couldn’t find a way out, A Woman’s Place showed me a way out. You made me feel braver.”
-Survivor Quote
As part of Weld Legacy Foundation’s capacity building services and our mission to promote excellence in health and education in Weld County, we are proud to announce proceeds from the Weld Legacy Foundation Gala will benefit A Woman’s Place Capital Campaign.
On average, nearly twenty people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. In one year, this equates to more than ten million women and men. Now imagine fleeing your home in the middle of the night with nothing but the clothes on your back, only to be turned away because there is no room at the only safehouse in Weld County, A Woman’s Place. Since 2019, more than 1,200 individuals, including 213 children, who were seeking emergency shelter have been turned away because the safehouse was at full capacity. In 2023, 44 individuals with a variety of health conditions were turned away because the only ADA accessible room was at full capacity.
Since A Woman’s Place opened in 1978, the population of Weld County has tripled and the need for services continues to increase. From January 2021 to March 2023, there were 1,722 domestic violence related misdemeanor cases and 650 domestic violence related felony cases in Weld County: a staggering 2,372 domestic violence related cases. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, approximately half of all domestic violence cases go unreported.
To meet the critical demand for increasing services, A Woman’s Place has launched a capital campaign for a new safehouse. Phase One includes a safehouse that will double the size of the existing safehouse with 16 bedrooms; eight single and eight family rooms, all of which are ADA accessible; individual bathrooms; community kitchen and dining area; laundry area with four washers and dryers; community living room area with a technology center; two playrooms, one on each floor; secured outdoor play area; two intake rooms; storage; and increased security. Phase Two will include an adjacent office building which will provide prevention education and crisis advocacy for non-residents.
